The George Sth Melbourne is situated directly opposite the Sth Melbourne Market, corner of Cecil Street and vibrant Coventry Street.  There is ample parking on top of the South Melbourne Market roof entering from Coventry Street, or you can simply catch the light rail either from the CBD or Bay side from St Kilda.  You can simply drop in or to make sure you get a table when we're busy,  just make a booking by giving us a call on 9686 5655.

In September 2006, The George South Melbourne was closed down and completely refurbished. The Hotel itself dates back to 1885 and the current Georgian facade was created around 1920. Through the years, the Hotel has had many different owners and for the most part was a fully functioning hotel in the classic sense, complete with accommodation.

In the 80’s, a TAB was put in the front bar and it was mainly a TAB venue. Food wasn't served, and even the windows were blocked out to create better lighting for the screens.

Interestingly, with all of the work done on the Hotel in 2006/2007, many people have commented that new warm environment is  similar to how it felt pre the TAB dark ages, 30 years ago.

The focus for the works was to create a venue where all could feel welcome, to create a genuine pub atmosphere as well as cater for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and all sorts of events and functions.

Outdoor dining was a focus, with landscaping on Coventry and Cecil Street and a private courtyard able to seat 40 people at the rear.

Works are still being done, with another outdoor area still to come, but we've had huge success for our first two years.We offer a wide range of foods from sandwiches, salads through to the more substantial pub classics such as steaks,  fish and chips and that Aussie classic, the parma.
